SAN JOSÉ, February 28, 2025. The European International Human Rights Network (RIDHE) receives at its headquarters in Costa Rica a delegation from the Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Central America. The purpose of the meeting was to analyze updates on the human rights situation in Nicaragua and to strengthen monitoring and reporting strategies to the international community.
During the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the ProdePaz Nicaragua Network, the worrying situation of academic freedom in Nicaragua was addressed. According to the testimonies and reports presented, universities have faced increasing interference from the Executive, with reforms that have eliminated their autonomy and have promoted political indoctrination. In addition, access to education for Nicaraguan refugee students in Costa Rica, who continue to face administrative and economic barriers to continuing their academic training in exile, was analyzed.
The visit concluded with the delivery of an updated report on the human rights situation in Nicaragua, which will be used as an input for international monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
RIDHE and RedProdePaz Nicaragua reiterated their commitment to continue to make visible the human rights crisis in the country, urging the international community to adopt urgent measures to guarantee the protection of victims of political repression and transnational persecution. They also called for strengthening the effective guarantee of the economic, social and cultural rights of refugees and asylum seekers, in accordance with international human rights standards.
