The RIDHE, in collaboration with PBI, various international and Nicaraguan organizations and Chile's mission to the UN will hold the event “Nicaragua, New Constitutional Architecture and Repressive Legislation”.
Description of the Event
This event aims to analyze the impact of recent constitutional reforms and repressive laws in Nicaragua, which have aggravated human rights violations. To this end, the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua (GHREN), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Nicaraguan human rights defenders and victims of repressive policies will participate.
General Objectives
● Make visible the impunity strategies implemented by the Nicaraguan government and their impact on human rights, with an emphasis on the constitutional framework and repressive legislation. In addition, to expose the serious violations of human rights and crimes against humanity that the regime has institutionalized through legal and constitutional reforms.
● Increase the level of awareness of United Nations member States about the situation in Nicaragua and promote political commitments and economic pressure in relation to human rights and respect for the rule of law.
● Strengthen the unity and cooperation of civil society, highlighting coordination between Nicaraguan and international organizations, and global support for demands for justice and the defense of human rights in Nicaragua.
Specific Objectives
● Raise awareness of the absence of the rule of law in Nicaragua and its implications for any form of bilateral or multilateral relationship between States and Nicaragua.
● Promote international support for the extension of the mandate of the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua (GHREN) and the OHCHR until 2025. This event is crucial to help make the human rights situation in Nicaragua visible.
