The RIDHE and Redprodepaz Nicaragua celebrate the resolution of the European Parliament to open investigations through the International Criminal Court against Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo for crimes against humanity in Nicaragua

A Step Closer to Justice and Democracy in Nicaragua

‍La RIDHE (International Human Rights Network Europe) and Redprodepaz Nicaragua we express our support for the recent resolution adopted by the European Parliament, that:

- Condemns systematic repression against the population, the democratic opposition, students and civil society organizations.

- Denounce the persecution of religious leaders and the use of exile and the revocation of nationality as tools of repression.

- Demands immediate release of all unjustly detained persons and the re-establishment of the rule of law in Nicaragua.

- Asks the Member States of the European Union that they initiate investigations through the International Criminal Court on crimes against humanity committed by Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo.

- Reject the recent constitutional reform What does it grant to presidential marriage absolute control over all State institutions, further undermining the independence of public authorities and freedom of expression.

- Stresses the crucial role of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, the Catholic Church and journalists, urging the EU to strengthen dialogue with these actors, including exiles, to support their essential work.

During the debate, members of the European Parliament such as Leire Pajín, Oihane Agirregoitia Martínez, Diana Riba i Giner, Antonio López-Istúriz White, Gabriel Mato and Francisco José Millán Mon They raised their voices to Denounce the serious human rights crisis in Nicaragua and support the need for justice for those responsible. RIDHE (International Human Rights Network Europe) and Redprodepaz Nicaragua we highlight the importance of international criminal law in the search for accountability and justice for victims. We urge the international community to follow up on this resolution and to keep its attention on the human rights situation in Nicaragua.

The resolution of the European Parliament denounces the serious human rights violations committed by the State of Nicaragua, demanding the immediate release of all unjustly detained persons and the re-establishment of the rule of law in the country. It also condemns the use of exile and the revocation of nationality as tools of repression and demands the safe return of exiles.
