January 2025

Concern about the increase in femicides and setbacks in sex affective education in Costa Rica.

RIDHE's Emergency Education program shares his memories that unfold a tapestry of stories, dreams and struggles.

The International Network for Human Rights Europe (RIDHE) Costa Rica echoes the work of RedProdepaz Nicaragua in supporting the condemnation and expressing deep concern over the five femicides recorded in January 2025 in Costa Rica—an alarming increase compared to last year.

According to data from the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), the number of femicides reported in January alone accounts for a quarter of all cases documented in 2024.

In this context, we warn about recent setbacks in sex-affective education, a key tool for preventing violence against women, following the elimination of the Comprehensive Affectivity and Sexuality Program. We believe that this type of education is essential to transforming sociocultural patterns based on gender stereotypes, promoting equality, and eradicating attitudes that perpetuate discrimination and violence within the framework of the right to inclusive and quality education.T

herefore, we urge the Costa Rican state to fulfill its international obligations to guarantee women's right to a life free from violence, as established by the Belém do Pará Convention and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). We call for the implementation of effective early warning systems and comprehensive public policies that address the structural causes of gender-based violence.
