Event Background

For this dialogue between academia and civil society, we welcomed two Nicaraguan activists: Allan Gómez, former political prisoner, and member of the Justice Commission of the Union of Nicaraguan Political Prisoners (UPPN); and Josimar Téllez, political activist and brother of political prisoner Muammar Vado.

Dialogue in Spanish, English translation available if necessary: Hybrid event

During the dialogue, the report “Detained, Tortured and Displaced: The Political Prison and its Aftermath in Nicaragua” was presented by Allan Gómez and co-researcher Dr. Julienne Weegels (CEDLA). This report compiles the testimonies of 32 ex-prisoners, who were arbitrarily detained and tortured as part of the crackdown on the massive anti-government protests in 2018.

The event also addressed the current situation in Nicaragua and its more than 200 political prisoners who remain behind bars.
